About Myself

H ello, my name is Mike Phillips, and here is a little bit about myself:

I was born in Oxford, England, in 1944, near the end of WW2. I grew up on the Sussex coast, in a middle class rural environment, went to a grammar school, and being quite bright, seemed on course to probably get into Oxford or Cambridge university. Except that I had got bitten by the show-biz bug about the age of eleven, spent all my spare time working in theatres, taking classes in dancing, singing, various instruments, theatre set design etc. and left home (and school) to join a travelling concert party at the age of seventeen. I was lucky enough to have a mother who actively encouraged me to enter the theatre as a career. The rest of my family was not at all impressed!

I then spent a number of years touring England and Scotland with various theatre companies, as a stage manager and then as a stage director and company manager. By the time I was twenty-one, I was taking quite large touring shows around England on my own, as a company manager. I had by then grown a beard to hide behind, when ordering around men who were at least twice my age!

Following this I was production manager for Bromley Repertory Company, designed lighting for a musical at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, toured a lot, had a lot of fun and met many famous and talented people.

I then specialized and trained in sound engineering, and as I was already an experienced lighting designer, I spent a number of years in London's West End designing and building sound and lighting installations, training technicians, lighting shows, and for a while was road manager for the Nolan Sisters. I worked with the late Tommy Cooper, Max Bygraves, Lulu, Dana, and many other stars. I worked on the famous musical "Hair" for over a year, which was an unforgettable experience.

During this period I met my wife Moira at a theatre party. We married and had our first child and eventually moved to Sussex, in the south of England. We set up an electrical business which is still going from strength to strength. We now have four children, two boys and two girls, aged ten, fourteen, eighteen and twenty-five.

Currently we have a start-up business in personal computers, a subject which has become dear to me! I have been active on the Internet since before it came to the general public notice, and I have a number of varied web sites that I maintain for myself and others. I find the amazing expansion of the Internet to be very exciting. Communication is the very fabric of living, and here is a totally limitless opportunity for it!

I first came across Scientology back in 1966. Since childhood I had been asking questions about the human mind and the spirit and getting no satisfactory answers. I studied various religions and philosophies, including Taoism and Zen and Cha'an Buddhism (where I found partial answers) and was in fact running the Eastbourne Buddhist Group in 1966. I found Scientology very new and exciting, and promptly took a job working at the then worldwide headquarters in East Grinstead in order to find out more (I was, as they say in the acting profession, "resting" at the time).
After touring with another show, I took a few months out and did some serious study at the London Academy of Scientology, and my life definitely changed for the better from then on. One immediate effect was that my earnings literally doubled from that point.

My wife and children have all become very keen on Scientology, from their own choice, and regularly do courses at the local Church. One cannot push another into Scientology - they have to find out and decide for themselves, but I have been very happy over the years to see each of my children decide for themselves that it was a subject and a religion that has far more to offer than any other, and to become Scientologists themselves.

One never learns "all" of Scientology. I am continuing to discover new and exciting truths, even after all these years, and I intend to use the subject as much as I can to create a better world for our children and the generations that come thereafter. The "Aims of Scientology" (as published on the Church's web site) are really and truly a clear statement of what every man, woman and child on earth would like our civilization to attain. I shall do my small part to help bring this about. I hope maybe you'll join in [End]
